small business storage unit equals cash

The Unseen Tool for Small Business: Storage Units

Welcome back to the Allstate Self Storage blog! This month we have been covering a wide range of storage topics from simple home hacks to the pros and cons of utilizing an outdoor storage space. This time we are looking at another niche need that storage units can meet: small businesses.

Struggling Small Business? Storage Units Can Help

Often, small businesses are not small because they are desired to be. The realities of resources confine the business, preventing it from evolving or growing at the rate that its owner, workers, and even customers and market might wish. A business might be the best fit to fill a specific need in the marketplace but until the operators have the resources to expand they may never be able to break through to that next tier of business.

That’s where self-storage comes in. Where small businesses are strapped for resources; capital, materials, space, consumers, etc. Storage facilities like us deal in one such resource: space. For a small cost, we can supply a small business storage units that will double, triple or more their available space.

How a business utilizes that space is then up to them (within the realms of the agreements) and there are many ways that businesses can benefit.

A business can use the storage unit as a storage facility for products on their way to customers, or as a stock room. Depending on what kind of inventory is being stored you can find the right storage unit for you. For instance, electronics or pharmaceutical reps would benefit from using a climate controlled unit.

Some facilities, though not many, allow work to be conducted in the unit. The kind of work is limited, as there are many laws and regulations in place on what units can be used for, but it may be possible. Speak with a facility manager about what is possible.

Use a storage unit space as a showroom to show off your products in an enticing space. For small businesses making custom furniture or home pieces, having a space to show example pieces can be the crucial step in expanding the business.

Pros to Small Business Storage Units

• The month to month nature of storage units means smaller businesses can jump in for the extra space and not be locked into a long-term contract. This saves money and helps curb risk!

• Work with your facility and you can have packages delivered directly to them, keeping all mail, packages, and correspondence in one easy to manage the flow.

There are plenty of ways businesses can leverage the extra provided space of a storage unit and facility. We provide the resource and with the right ingenuity, they turn it into profit. If a self-storage facility is what your business needs to break through to the next income bracket, find the nearest Allstate Self Storage facility and see if it’s a good match. Needing to Store Outside? Storage Unit Facilities Have Got Your Back

Welcome back to another entry in the Allstate Self-Storage blog. Last time we discussed easy storage tips for around the house, simple little bits that could be easily implemented to get your home organized and space cleared up. This time we are looking outdoors, specifically to outside storage. Units at some self-storage facilities are indoors (which have a wide number of benefits) but sometimes that just is not what you need. Let’s look at it more!

Outside Storage Unit vs Outside Storage Space

As silly as it seems, there is a distinction to be made here. Choosing the wrong one might see all of your belongings being hit by adverse weather damages you did not anticipate.

An outside storage unit can mean something like a drive-up storage unit. Essentially, this is any unit that has its door on a roadway, it is outdoors and can be pulled up right to. This is the most common sort of storage unit and allows for easy loading and unloading. Depending on the facility, these might also have less access to electricity, not needing climate control etc. If you are looking for a storage space and are wondering if an outside storage unit is what you need, it will benefit you to make the call to the possible facilities and see what their outdoor units offer.

An outside storage space meanwhile is an open-air area. Think like a fenced in lot and you have the right idea. These are used for storing vehicles such as cars and boats mostly but that’s not their only use. Again, speaking with the facility manager will give you an idea of what is able to be stored in these spaces and what would be better stored in an enclosed outside storage unit.

Why Choose an Outside Storage Unit?

As mentioned, an outdoor/outside storage unit has a number of benefits that put it ahead of an indoor facility.

• Drive – Up Access

o Drive – up access makes it ideal when the storage is being used for a move. It will save you a whole mess of hassle when you can simply walk 5 steps and have your truck loaded or unloaded.

• Storing for Business

o If the storage is being used for business purposes that ease of access will make everything much simple, saving you time – and as you know, time is money.

• Cheaper

o For the cost of space, outside storage units are drastically more affordable.

• Space

o Speaking of space, the size of outdoor storage units can be much larger than the often uniform settings of indoor storage facilities.

Think vertically!

• Use all the height available in bigger cabinets! Use smaller, thin shelves to store things like spices above the bottom of the cabinet. These smaller shelves can be easily

• The backs of cupboard doors have plenty of extra space just waiting to be used. Tack up plastic bags to get them out of your drawers. Mount a magazine holder to store plastic wrap and tin foil.

• Use the height of your cabinets below your sink and install tension rods. With these in place, you can hang up all the spray bottles and make for an easier to find and navigate cleaning supply.

Repurpose

• Have a bunch of belts hanging on the back of your door? Grab some paper towel holders and wrap ‘em up. Now you have them stored on a shelf in the closet taking up significantly less space and out of sight!

• Placing picture shelves next to your bed can act as small nightstand replacements. No longer wonder where your phone or glasses went when they sit at the perfect level next to your bed.

• Do you have a veritable dump of papers, mail, and bills scattered across your counters? Grab an old shutter laying in the garage (you know, the one you were going to sand and stain and use for something, well here’s it’s chance!) and mount it to the wall, make sure the slats open upward. Now you can slide in mail and bills and reclaim your counters.
