Packing Tips
New to packing? Here are some helpful tips…
- Limit box weight when possible to a maximum weight of 60 pounds to make handling easier.
- Make sure to wrap all fragile items carefully.
- Make sure that you pack all heavier items first with lighter or more fragile items on top.
- Use sturdy boxes to ensure items do not get damaged during storage.
- Make sure boxes are firmly packed and do not move, bulge outward or bend inward causing items to break.
- Pack similar items together to make unpacking easier.
Basic checklist…
- Start with things used infrequently, leaving until last, the things you’ll need up to moving day.
- Empty drawers of breakables before moving and storing furniture items.
- Wrap fragile items individually with clean non abrasive materials.
- Use a double layer of newspaper for a good outer wrapping.
- Place a layer of newspaper or comparable material to create a cushion for items.
- Build up in layers, with heaviest things on the bottom, medium weight next and lightest on top. This ensures that heavier items won’t settle and break other items below.
- Avoid overloading boxes, but try for a firm pack preventing items from shifting; the cover should close easily without force.
- Close boxes tightly with packing tape to ensure a properly sealed box.
- Make sure to list the contents on the side of the box (for easy viewing while boxes are stacked). You may number and/or code the cartons as well.
